- GitHub Copilot makes GPT-6.1 Terra generally available for agentic coding
GitHub's changelog says GPT-6.1 Terra, OpenAI's newest model, is now generally available in GitHub Copilot. It is designed for everyday agentic coding and terminal work at a lower cost than GPT-6.1 Sol.
- GitHub Copilot usage metrics API adds totals_by_client for tools like OpenCode
GitHub’s Copilot usage metrics API now reports model usage from clients outside the IDE, including OpenCode, Claude Code, Codex, Zed, Copilot CLI, and others, via a new totals_by_client array on enterprise and organization 1-day and 28-day reports. The change is meant to capture server-side model traffic that editor telemetry missed.
- GitHub Copilot in Microsoft Teams can turn issue notifications into pull requests
GitHub’s changelog says the consolidated GitHub app in Microsoft Teams (formerly GitHub notifications) lets teams @mention GitHub on an issue notification so Copilot can investigate, open a fix PR, and keep review in the chat. The legacy GitHub app is marked deprecated and set to retire on November 16, 2026.
- GitHub adds opt-in industry comparisons to the Copilot impact dashboard
GitHub's Copilot impact dashboard now has an Industry comparison section so enterprises can compare agentic Copilot adoption and leverage with aggregated peer benchmarks. Participation is opt-in and off by default, with peer groups by company size and industry, and rankings appear only after enough peers join. Comparisons refresh daily and are not included in the Copilot usage metrics API or exports.
- GitHub starts enforcing a global default policy for new Copilot features through October 26
GitHub is gradually rolling out enforcement of its global default policy for generally available Copilot features and supported client capabilities on Copilot Business and Enterprise, through October 26. Eligible features left unconfigured follow the global policy under AI Controls → Copilot → Default policy for new features; admins can still set individual features explicitly.
- GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio adds PR exploration, custom models and vulnerable-package fixes
GitHub's September update for Copilot in Visual Studio lets the Git agent explore a pull request from chat with navigable links to comments and files, brings team-chosen AI models into the IDE, and can fix vulnerable packages when Visual Studio flags them. The changelog points Insiders users to the latest channel for the features.
- GitHub Copilot usage metrics now name custom skills, agents, MCP servers, slash commands and plugins
GitHub's Copilot usage metrics API and enterprise/organization reports now show the configured names of customer-defined skills, custom agents, MCP servers, slash commands and plugins instead of grouping them under other or custom. The change builds on the agentic CLI customization metrics from September and applies to per-user and aggregated day reports.
- GitHub deprecates six models in Copilot, including GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4 and Grok 4.5, as of Oct. 19
As of Oct. 19, GitHub has deprecated Gemini 3.7 Flash, GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4, GPT-5.4 mini, GPT-5 mini and Grok 4.5 across most GitHub Copilot experiences, including Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions. GitHub suggests Gemini 3.8 Flash, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Luna and Grok 4.7 as replacements; the deprecations were announced on Sept. 18. Copilot Enterprise administrators may need to enable the alternative models through their model policies.
- GitHub makes its Copilot model policy REST API generally available for enterprises, teams, apps and organizations
GitHub's GET and PATCH endpoints for retrieving and updating Copilot model policies are now generally available at four levels: enterprises, enterprise teams, enterprise apps and organizations. Enterprise policies can delegate model control to organizations in organization mode, or to teams and apps in enterprise teams mode.
- GitHub will retire Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Terra from Copilot on November 16, pointing users to Opus 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Luna
GitHub says Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Terra will leave every Copilot experience—including Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and completions—on November 16, 2026, with Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Luna as suggested replacements. Claude Opus 4.8 stays available to individual Copilot subscribers on annual plans so they keep an Opus option. Under default model enablement, Copilot Enterprise and Business get the alternatives automatically unless an admin turned off the global default or disabled the model.
- GitHub Copilot in Slack and Microsoft Teams can now work across multiple repositories in one conversation
GitHub says Copilot in Slack and Microsoft Teams now handles several repositories in a single conversation, for example listing your open pull requests across repos, summarizing merged work or investigating an issue that spans frontend and backend code. You can now mention @GitHub anywhere in a message, switch repositories more easily, and in Slack Copilot can use shared messages and threads as context. GitHub also says it reduced errors and improved task startup and recovery from interruptions.
- GitHub updates Copilot's HydraFusion multi-model orchestration and adds HydraFusion Max for harder tasks
GitHub updated HydraFusion, the research-preview Copilot option that orchestrates multiple models to produce one response, with a model pool that now includes Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. It now sets reasoning effort per step, medium for drafts and high for review; its Cascade workflow can add a judging step that requests a repair only when needed, and Critique now inspects the workspace directly with parallel critic models. The new HydraFusion Max uses the same workflows with higher reasoning effort for the most demanding tasks. Both are available in VS Code, the GitHub Copilot app and Copilot CLI on Pro, Pro+, Business and Enterprise plans with preview features enabled.
- Gemini 4 Argon is now generally available in GitHub Copilot
GitHub says Google's Gemini 4 Argon is now generally available in GitHub Copilot for Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise users, selectable in VS Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the Copilot coding agent, the GitHub Copilot app, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode and Eclipse, with a gradual rollout. GitHub says Argon solved more tasks than previous Gemini models on every coding benchmark in its early testing, with the largest gains in Copilot CLI. It is billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing, and Business and Enterprise admins control access through model policy.
- GitHub Copilot lets enterprise admins force clients to fetch current managed settings at startup
GitHub says enterprise administrators can now set forceRemoteSettingsRefresh so supported Copilot clients (Copilot CLI, VS Code and the GitHub Copilot app) must retrieve current server-managed settings at startup instead of relying on a cached policy. If a client cannot confirm the current policy, it fails closed. GitHub is also adding minimum client version requirements to governance-focused managed settings keys, starting with the sandbox key that backs the generally available local sandbox.
- GitHub Copilot lets enterprise admins attribute telemetry to users without capturing prompts
A new telemetry.capture.identity managed setting adds user.name, process.user.name and host.name to Copilot's OpenTelemetry data, so enterprise administrators can attribute activity to a user without collecting prompts, responses or tool content. Admins can also separately enable five capture classes (prompts, responses, toolArguments, toolOutput, policyDetail) in Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot app and VS Code Agent Host sessions. Everything is off by default, and managed values override local settings, SDK configuration and environment variables.
- GitHub Copilot for JetBrains adds enterprise default-model controls, diagnostic Fix, and MCP startup toggle
GitHub's Copilot for JetBrains changelog says enterprise managed settings can set any available Copilot agent model as the default for new chats, diagnostic menus gain a Fix action that opens inline chat (agent mode when available), and a new MCP setting can disable automatic server startup. The release also refreshes account/chat navigation, groups messages by turn, and drops support for JetBrains IDE 2025.1 (2025.2+ required).
- GitHub lets organizations pay for Copilot code reviews and restrict who can request them
GitHub added billing and license controls for Copilot code review. Organization owners can bill reviews requested by licensed members to the organization instead of the members' own Copilot quotas, which requires AI Credits paid usage and allows an optional budget. Organization owners and repository admins can also control whether people with external licenses can request a review.
- GitHub Copilot local sandboxing is now generally available in Copilot CLI, the Copilot app and VS Code
GitHub made local sandboxing generally available for Copilot CLI, the Copilot app and VS Code sessions using Agent Host. Commands Copilot runs get restricted access to files, networks, Git and GitHub CLI credentials based on developer or organization policies, enforced through Microsoft eXecution Container (MXC) on Windows, macOS and Linux. Enterprises can require sandboxing, and it comes at no extra cost.
- GitHub Copilot CLI can now discover local Ollama models from the /model picker
Starting in Copilot CLI version 1.0.94-0, the /model command lists supported models from a running local Ollama instance alongside configured and cloud models. Users can add a discovered model for the current session without restarting the CLI; models must support tool calling and streaming, and picking a local model does not turn on offline mode or disable telemetry.
- GitHub ships dynamic workflows in Copilot CLI and the Copilot app
GitHub announced dynamic workflows in Copilot CLI and the Copilot app, per its official changelog.
