- Linux kernel docs maintainer applies a patch dropping the Assisted-by AI disclosure tag, as Linus Torvalds calls rules against AI tools 'utterly stupid'
Docs maintainer Jonathan Corbet said on the kernel mailing list on October 14 that he had applied Sasha Levin's patch removing the Assisted-by sections, which asked contributors to tag patches made with help from an LLM, from the kernel's coding-assistants and submitting-patches documentation and its translations, and dropping the tag's handling from checkpatch. Replying on the list on October 13 to Laurent Pinchart, who objected, Linus Torvalds called the concept of "don't use AI for X" idiotic and such rules "UTTERLY STUPID", comparing them to banning compilers, and said he expects people to understand what they are doing regardless of the tools they use.
- Linus Torvalds used LLM tools to untangle the kernel's assoc_array code and found three more bugs from 2013, per Phoronix
Phoronix reports that a new assoc-array-fixes Git tag from Linus Torvalds describes an LLM-assisted branch that splits the Linux kernel's hard-to-read assoc_array library into clearer functions. Torvalds wrote that he could not follow a bug fix from Nils Ollrogge, so he "did what I preach" and used LLM tools; a user-space test harness then confirmed the reported bug and found three others dating to the library's first commit in 2013. The patches are not yet merged and may target the Linux 7.4 merge window.
- Linus Torvalds uses Claude Code for a Linux page-cache patch series, per Phoronix
Phoronix reports that Linus Torvalds pushed a noref-filemap-read-with-llm branch that lets Linux read from the page cache without taking folio references, easing contention when many threads make small reads of one file. Torvalds wrote that the code, test programs, review and first draft of the cover letter were done with Claude Code under his direction; the branch is unmerged and could target the Linux 7.4 merge window.
