Google DeepMind and Singapore's Government Technology Agency fine-tuned Google's lightweight Gemma model on local scam conversations, from impersonation of public institutions, banks and local figures to trending regional schemes, so it can detect manipulative intent in real time and warn users to pause. The model runs entirely on the device, so neither the Singapore government nor Google can access conversations, and once integrated into apps it will only read conversations with the user's consent, in a phased rollout developed with the government. Scams make up over half of Singapore's reported crimes and have caused more than S$4 billion in losses since 2019.
