Visual Studio Code 1.142 adds shared canvases for agent workflows, chat moves across folders and stronger agent permissions

Visual Studio Code published this on Oct 14, 2026 (source: code.visualstudio.com).

Visual Studio Code 1.142, released October 14, 2026, adds shared canvases in preview so developers can collaborate with agents beyond chat using visual and interactive boards, and lets a chat move to another folder or a new Git worktree without losing conversation history. The release expands the Markdown editor with image paste, file-link rename and breadcrumbs, redesigns the model picker for Copilot and bring-your-own-key models including effort and context controls, and lets administrators enforce agent sandboxing and permission policies while controlling which permission modes developers can use.
